I keep getting this error after reaching the physical Alt/AZ adjustment phase of the Alignment tool.
I am not sure I have had tracking on or not. Cound that be the cause?

For sure you should be tracking. If/when you get this again, please post a full log with debugging on.
If you're in that situation and "just want to get stuff done", then you might try (a) pointing in a little different spot before starting polar alignment, and/or (b) using the MoveStar polar alignment algorithm if the PlateSolve scheme is giving you a hard time.

Before you connect, click the Logs button, and make sure it is set to Verbose, File, and pretty much all the Ekos checkboxes are checked, and hit apply.
You can find the log on Linux at ~/.local/share/kstars/logs under the date.
