Can the pi connect to my router to download updates and files? or is it only a broadcasting host? I also added a RTclock - anyone know how I can make it work? I messed with HWclock file - but no luck.

Yes it can. It works as a hot spot / virtual access point only if not connected to a home network.
You can connect to your home network either by running "sudo wlanconf" in your terminal or clicking wifi icon located in desktop top bar.
I have seen your other posts on problems with that - please consult FAQ section on the project page . BTW link to the project page is located in my signature in every post and also in the first post (top one) in this subforum.
