Yes. It's a must when you are in the field with no internet connection to the raspberry.

IT's the same when you use a smartphone/tablet like a gps?

Yes. You can also enter manually all the data in the Site Management (mount options). But it's easier and fast using the gps.

If I can use fewer devices attached to the raspberry it is better, if I can only use the smartphone for the rtc and gps function it would make it less complicated to manage

Could you hint on how to connect/configure.
I installed NetGPS, enabled the server, it gave me an IP address.
Now, how to connect and where to stick the address?
I am a bit lost...
Thanks!

1. First, connect your phone to the astroberry hotspot.
2. Assign a static ip for the phone (every time you connect to hotspot you may have a different ip)
3. Start Kstars and ekos. In the drivers aux tab chose GPS Nmea. Click save.
4. Start NetGPS Server. Create a server with the + sign and enable it. Pay attention to the port number. This one has to match with the port from ekos. I set mine to 50000
5. Start ekos. Go to GPS Nmea tab in the indi driver., choose connection and in the server option put the the static ip of the the phone an the port number and click set. Mine is 10.42.0.45 port 50000. Now go to options and click save to save the configuration.

The phone acts as a server. The indi driver is comunicating via IP with the phone. You need to point the indi driver to the phone, in the GPS Nmea options. The save the configuration.

Adding to that, using GPS on your phone may quickly drain the battery. In principles only a first update from the phone to KStars is needed. The internal clock of the pi is stable enough to not drift too much over one night. Plus your telescope will not travel so once the location and time are known you can stop the app on the phone. GPS Nmae will complain (and therefore so will Ekos) but you may ignore that.

It took me over 8 months to get back to this but I got NetGPS working with Ekos!
Will soon be travelling to a remote/dark location 400mi/650km away - will see how it works in the wild.
Thanks for your help!

Hi where is Site Management to manually set GPS co-ords... Just started with Astroberry, really floundering on getting it going.... when I click on GPS on indi tab it shows Warsaw in Poland and the latitude and longitude are not editable?

You can also set the geographic location where you are going ahead of time in Kstars > Settings > Geographic and save the location. Then all you need to do is set the clock on the Pi4 after firing it up and select that particular location. You should be synchronized then.
That's what I did when I went to a dark site in New Mexico a couple of years back over New Year. Worked like a charm for me then, without a GPS.

Funny thing - I did exactly that when travelled to Mexico a couple of years back over New Year : )
I just wanted to try GPS in case I might need to use it some day for some reason.
Coordinates/time can be synced via SM app anyway. I keep forgetting about this app's existence.
