INDI Library v2.0.6 is Released (02 Feb 2024)

Bi-monthly release with minor bug fixes and improvements

SBig ST-i hangs trying to take exposure

So finally today after a few hours of trying to figure out the debayer issue, I got guiding to work!! I wouldn't recommend ST-I color for guiding though, the ST-I mono is a lot better, and nothing beats Lodestar, not even ST-I :-)

That's great news. I'll update and try it out sometime.

I bought the ST-i colour thinking I'd be doing some planetary imaging with it as well as using it as a guider. If I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn't have bothered and just gone mono instead for the extra sensitivity.

I just made some updates to the indi-sbig driver to make detection of guide head & filter wheel more robust, but they need testing. Before connecting, go to Options --> Enable Debug & select "Driver Debug" under "Logging" and also "Log to File". Make the first test without a filter wheel connected then check the log & save it. Then the next test with the filter wheel connected. If all goes well, you will see a filter tab, select the filter wheel model and connect. If all goes well, try to change filters...etc... then go to options and "save config". then disconnect. Terminate the INDI sbig driver and restart it again, then connect to the SBIG CCD (don't forget to enable debug as before), and check if it connects automatically to the filter wheel, and if it does, try to control the filter wheel just make sure. Also check if it detected the guide head if your CCD has one.

I haven't been able to get outside to test the colour ST-i guiding, but I thought I'd have a go at desktop testing the stuff in your last message with my ST-8XE.

I updated the indi-code and kstars and rebuilt everything.

For the first test, I made sure the filter wheel was unplugged before connecting. However, when I connected, it "detected" the filter wheel and claimed to have connected to it. I could change the filter position in the software, but of course this had no impact on the filter wheel.

I then started the process again, this time with the filter wheel plugged in. I connected and it detected the filter wheel again. This time though it worked perfectly when changing the filters.

I also did a test to see if it found the guider on the ST-8XE and it seems to have worked - I can't be 100% certain until I get to do outside testing, but it seemed right.

I then went to the CCD panel to ensure it was working fine and then things went a bit pear shaped. The sequence buttons had nothing on them so I randomly clicked around. At some point I did something and kstars crashed. I restarted with the debugger to attempt to find out what happened, but I can't even get that far now as I get a corrupted panel appear when I try to start INDI from the ekos setup panel.

I'll poke around some more to see if I can progress further, but any ideas on this one? Btw, when this occurs, kstars locks up and becomes unresponsive. I have to ctrl-c / kill it to get out.

What distro are you using? I have seen this nasty crash before when using project-neon5. I presume you are building KStars from GIT? I rembember the way I was able to get rid of this crash is by installing a fresh Kubuntu 14.10 and installing all the required KDE5 dependencies from 14.10 repo itself (NOT Kubuntu-CI PPA or even KStars PPA). The only problem with 14.10 packages is extra-cmake-modules package is bugged, so I had to compile it from it GIT. Unfortunately, it seems things will only become stable in 15.04.

Regarding the first scenario, can you please svn up again, compile, and send me the detailed log file? Make sure no CFW is connected. The driver basically tries to get the firmware version of the filter wheel, so if an error occurs it means no filter wheel is connected. This is the logic anyways maybe it doesn't work in reality.

I'm using Gentoo and admittedly that's been entertaining getting KDE5 going. I am building kstars from git. I seem to be on the latest cmake-extra-modules as well, as it comes from git. I've just updated and rebuilt it again and will update indi. I'll then rebuild indi and kstars again and report back.

Well, I've gone quite backwards here at the moment. I can't even get kstars running:

Any ideas on this one?

No, but try commenting that line, let's see how far it goes...

I commented it out and now it's further along and hangs trying to start ekos. I'm doing a few more updates of other libraries so I'll see if that makes a difference.

Success, I'm back in action. I'm not sure exactly what cured it, but after the previous failure:

I updated indi and rebuilt;
Rebuilt cmake and the cmake extras
Rebuilt glib/glibc
Rebuilt kstars.

I've attached (I think) the logs of the filter wheel test. It still showed it as being connected.

Also, I found a small bug I think: on the ekos setup panel, when you hit disconnect devices, it seems to work, but doesn't change state to allow the connect devices to work? If I go back to the devices panel, it shows the device as being disconnected correctly.
