INDI Server can't connect to Atik cameras

Newbie problem hopefully, but I get the following error when starting EKOS:



I have tried this on both my Raspi and on my Odroid N2, which are both running Ubuntu Mate 18.04, with Rob Lancaster's excellent AstroPi3 scripts used to install the Astro elements, but I get the same response on both.

Main CCD is an Atik 16hr and the guide is an Atik 16ic.

Power is on to both, 16ic connecting via a 4 port unpowered hub which is happliy connecting the SX Filter Wheel and the Mount to INDI Server and EKOS, and the 16hr connecting directly to the SBCs

I am not just green with INDI, EKOS and KSTARS, but also with the lands of Raspi, Odroid and Linux, so I fear that if I were any more green you wouldn't see me if I lay down on grass.

Having worked in technology for the last 35 years, I hate not knowing even where to start looking, but assume I can pick this up relatively quickly if anyone assist in guiding my fumbling around.

Hi and welcome
It’s sounds to me as it this may be a power issue, you should always use a powered USB hub in these situations, as the rpi is not powerful enough to power the hub and all the devices connected to it...
Try a powered hub and see what happens...

Thanks for the swift respose AstoNerd.

With the cameras both getting 12v from a PSU, do you need the powered hub or is this a 5v usb power issue?

Given the 16hr is going direct to the SBC and not via the hub, I assumed that this would rule out hub power issues.

On Linux the tool to start debugging connection issues is dmesg. It is a command line tool which provides system info from start up to "now". The best way to use it in this case is to start the tool such that it continues displaying messages when new ones arrive. To do so, open a terminal and type

dmesg -w

Please do this with no cameras connected. As soon as the output stops scrolling you can plug in one camera. If the camera is detected by Linux then you should see output appear. Then unplug the camera and plug in the other. To stop dmesg simply hit

CTRL-c

Next plug in both cameras and, still in the terminal, type

lsusb

This will display some basic info about the USB devices that were connected. Is there any info there about your cameras? Perhaps just copy and past the output of lsusb here so we can help you further.

So it looks like the RPi detects that power is consumed from an USB port and then disables it to correct the loss of voltage. Are you using a power supply for the RPi that is powerful enough? The RPi needs a 12V power supply that provides at least 2A and preferable 3A. Though a powered USB hub may help indeed as well.

The first thing I added was the Atik HR16, no issues there, only seemed to be upset about the hub being added, or the SX wheel's consumption potentially, but then seemed to correct itself, but could be misreading this.

For now, I'll focus on the 16HR and disconnect the others to avoid confusion and repost.

As to the RPi wanting 12v, isn't this is 5v@2A from a micro USB for a RPi3b+?

Sorry, yes, the RPi wants 5V and at least 2A but preferably more. What happens if you do not use the hub but simply attach the different hardware (cameras, fw, mount) one by one to the available USB ports?

Just checked and EKOS still comes up with the original error on the CCD, but (as expected) now can't see the SX Wheel or the mount
