I've been working on updating the lxgemini telescope driver, and have a question. I've cloned the repo, made my update and tried to do a diff using meld, but it doesn't seem to be in the repo. I'd rather not build it from scratch or install some ppa. Is there a reason that meld is not in the distro?

sudo apt install meld
is the normal way to get meld, at least for Ubuntu.

OH -- yes of course. I forgot to mention that I was having this issue on astroberry. I'm pretty sure that an older version of astroberry had meld available. It's not there now though.
