It is a success build now. I have Kstars/Ekos running on the Mac. :woohoo:

I have taken notes of the entire installation, from start to finish.

I need to take some time now and review the install process, and write a document for the Sierra users.

That is exciting!! But you are not done yet ;-)

Did you get gsc installed yet? My instructions in there work pretty well. It is very useful for getting the simulators running.

Astrometry.net? I didn't write any instructions for that, but if you install it from home-brew, and put the index files in ~/Library/Application Support/Astrometry and then edit the config file in /usr/local/Cellar/astrometry-net/0.67_2/etc to reflect that path for the index files, and finally set the paths correctly in KStars, it should work.

XPlanet? I just followed the directions on the website and it worked. But, I don't really know what it does. I see that it has the ability to put what is on kstars on my background for my desktop, but that is really all I have seen with it installed. Might be useful or not, I really cannot tell.

And one other issue is the new stuff downloader. I was working on this problem last week. I got it working in the emerge version, but I'm not sure about the other yet. There are two environment variables that I determined need to be set properly (exported) before running kstars and then magically it worked. In the emerge version those were:

export PATH=~/kf/bin
export QT_PLUGIN_PATH=~/kf/lib/plugins

Your instructions may also work better for all of us, because remember I tried SOOO many things to get this up and running in the first place. I don't know what is installed or not installed on my computer anymore and I have 2 different versions of the installation at the same time. I don't know if they are conflicting or not. I encountered the kinds of errors that you saw over the last couple of days for the last couple of months. So I don't have any idea why anything works anymore ;)

The bad news is, we may be banging our heads against a wall, but the good news is that according to Physics, the wall does move when we do!

I need to do the gsc part.

As for xplanet, the install as straight forward. But it's not tested yet.

Stephanes-MacBook-Air:kstars-build stephane$ brew search xplanet
xplanet xplanetfx
Stephanes-MacBook-Air:kstars-build stephane$ brew install xplanet
==> Installing dependencies for xplanet: giflib
==> Installing xplanet dependency: giflib
==> Downloading homebrew.bintray.com/bottles/giflib-4.2....erra.bottle.1.tar.gz

==> Pouring giflib-4.2.3.sierra.bottle.1.tar.gz
/usr/local/Cellar/giflib/4.2.3: 39 files, 603.4K
==> Installing xplanet
==> Downloading homebrew.bintray.com/bottles/xplanet-1.3.1.sierra.bottle.tar.gz

I went back through and couldn't find this - do we have a workaround for the indiserver problem on sierra, where KStars can't find it when starting ekos?

For me the new stuff downloader was a bit of a priority because I wanted to download the images and larger catalogs. But for the longest time, I just couldn't solve the problem. Emerge helped me fix it I think

I don't think the issue is sierra so much as its just a pain in the rear to install due to the dependencies needing to be in the right places and all.
