Ok - I've figured out the problem I was having with the VLC backend. It was a clean install of all the VLC files, and only the console-based VLC application generates the plugins cache correctly.

To fix this, you need to manually run:
sudo /usr/lib/vlc/vlc-cache-gen -f /usr/lib/vlc/plugins

and hey presto - you should have a working VLC phonon backend! B)

Thanks for pointing it out, this bug which is over a year old is very annoying still.

Thank you for the info.
I was trying to get the vlc backend to work in Kubuntu for some time and then gave up and switched to MATE and no problems there.
