Fitting USB gps dongle inside rpi case... #33118
According to the G7020-KT datasheet ( innovictor.com/pdf/UBX-G7020-Kx_DataShee...01)_Confidential.pdf section 6.1.1) , pin 8 is for usb_DM (D-) and pin 10 is for usb DP (D+).
According to the usb connector design central pin 2 is for D- and pin 3 is for D+, pin 1 is for vcc and pin 4 is for gnd
So if I not wrong this shoudl be something like this :

Please double check vcc and ground before plugin !!

Fitting USB gps dongle inside rpi case... #33137
Hi AstroNerd and happy new year!

I am very curious how it works - I would have thought, but do not know, that using the GPIOs of the Pi instead of the USB interface will require another driver that addresses the Pi‘s GPIOs. This is why I was pointing you to the astroberry-diy repository. However, could be that in your case, specifically for the TX/RX and V, GND it does not matter.

It might be necessary to also update the file /etc/default/gps (or similar).

Best, Helge

Happy new year to you too.. :)
Hmmm, you may be correct, I am no expert when it comes to the software side of things, I was just assuming, maybe wrongly, that it would just work the same a plugging a USB version in....plug and play as it were... )

I would recommend an alternative solution and install a serial GPS breakout board such as this one from Adafruit.
Adafruit Ultimate GPS Breakout - 66 channel w/10 Hz updates
It is not difficult too install with a some basic skill and configured with GPSD. The external antenna is optional, but does improve the signal greatly. Orientation makes a big difference, ideally aim the breakout board straight up to the sky, or the antenna if you use that.

INDI/KStars on Raspberry Pi 3B+
Lubuntu 16.04
Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro Mount
Canon 600D Camera
Orion SSAG @280mm Guide Scope
PHD2
Adafruit Motor Hat shield
Adafruit GPS Module
Generic Bluetooth Joystick.
Startech 7 port powered USB Hub.

Warning fitting the Ublox inside the RPI case could cause Wifi problems - I have noticed that on my Zero W that when the Ublox GPS is connected the Wifi drops quite a few times. So after so research I found this forum.u-blox.com/index.php/9054/coexiste...without-interference which implies that moving he GPS inside or close COULD cause problems :-)

Hence my other thread about getting GPSD via remote GPSD (not phone)

RPI3 Ubuntu 16.04 / AMD desktop Kstars under Ubuntu 16.04 Mounts :azeq6 ,SWAZGoTo

RPI3 Fedora testing out on AMD desktop Fedpra 28 - running kstars 2.9.4 , Indilib 1.7.4 ?????

Fitting USB gps dongle inside rpi case... #33458
Hi AstroNerd,
I am curious to know whether you succeeded in getting the USB GPS dongle to work after simply plugging it into the (constricted space of the RPi) USB socket? I am relatively new to INDI, astroberry, the RPi and Ubuntu MATE Linux, and I know I am on a steep learning curve, but cannot seem to get the software to use the GPS for a time and location fix. I know the U-blox dongle is working and can study the data with various commands, but on the excellent astroberry image implementation, the presence of the USB GPS dongle is recognised by EKOS etc, but no Fix is acknowledged.
I attach a photo of the results obtained from lsusb. There does not seem to be any ambiguity in the serial ports as suggested as a potential problem.

Thanks for any help with this great software!

Currently running KStars/Ekos/Indi on a Raspberry Pi 4B 2GByte under Raspbian thanks to AstroPi3 Script
Sky-Watcher ED80 Pro with 0.85x FR/Corrector with Canon DSLR on AZ-EQ5 GT mount

Hi,
I have not fitted it inside the case as yet, due to the post about it causing issues with WiFi.
I use it plugged into the USB port without issue, but when I first tried it the signal was hit an miss, and took around 2 mins to pick up a signal, but now after setting it up in the serial mapping feature of the software it works perfectly each time and connects within 30 secs.
But I use the SM os and not AstroBerry, but should not really make a difference as both using Ekos and INdI.. :)

Forgot to say, have you checked the box in ekos which says “Kstars is updated by GPS” or it won’t get a fix from it.. :)

Thanks for responding quickly - yes I have ticked the box to get GPS to update KStars. I watched the SM tutorial about the ambiguity of the USB Serial assignments, then subsequently read the INDI tutorial from a couple of years ago explaining how to lock down the assignments of the USB connected devices.
