Using histogram to determine optimal settings

Any suggestions to using the histogram tool to better assist in determining the optimal settings in each cameras? Or some rule of thumb? My ASI294 is usually set to unity gain (Gain 117 , 16BIT and all other Indi setting default) and I take as long as photo as my mount will track and the sky does not wash out the picture. Usually around 3-4 min. I like the pictures I'm getting, just wondering how to best use the histogram tool as I've looked and not found much to read. Maybe take a shot with all standard settings then open the preview once done and look for some specific value or range........ then adjust the exposure time or gain or ......Thanks

It might not be necessary to expose that long with the 294.

Read this thread, its for ZWO 1600, but should give you some idea about where to start.
