how critical location coordinates are? was created by maxthebuilder

Hello,
I am going to travel/camping not very far from home - about 80mi/130km away.
Do I need to update the location coordinates in KStars? What's the tolerance there?
(I don't have a GPS dongle).
Thanks!

Time and Location settings are critical to the proper operation of StellarMate. This is even more apparent if you're on the go with a mobile setup. For a fixed-observatory, the only factor you have to worry about synchronizing is time. On the otherhand, a mobile setup requires both location and time settings to be accurate.

The time & location settings are not only used for KStars, but also to synchrnoize the mount and any other devices with time & location dependencies. For example, some weather drivers depend on location to query and retrieve information about the current weather.

I do realize that it's important....
But my question was (I should've emphasized it more clearly) - what is the tolerance there?
Is it OK to move 1km away without updating? 2km? 10?
2 digits after decimal point is enough? 3?

Thanks!

Is best to be accurate. It will affect your pointing accuracy.
If you know where you will be, why not prepare a new custom location in the set geography window?

If you do, you will also be able to see how much the sky differs by switching back and forth.

: ) I do realize that it's best to be accurate...
Still, it would be interesting to know what the consequences are if I am, say, 1-50 km off...
I am not talking about 1000 km which would, I guess, make a huge difference.
OK. I'll experiment myself.
Thanks!

All depend what you do with your telescope.
To measure asteroid position for example the require tolerance is just a few meters.

But if it's to make nice pictures some kilometers do not make a difference.
The limit may be the hour angle computation, this can make the mount meridian flip wrong, or trying to slew to an object below the horizon.
111 km make a difference of one degree, take this as the limit.
