:(
I figured it would take some time. But it looks like it will be longer. But at least the devs have expressed they are looking into developing Ubuntu Mate for Pi4.

But that Wimpress guy is THE creator of Ubuntu Mate. This was also picked up by Forbes Magazine:

Also, by looking at the Ubuntu Core thread referenced in the Ubuntu Mate community forum, I see that an experimental Ubuntu Core 18 image for the Pi4 is now out (albeit only for dev purposes). Things are moving fast!!

I would say Martin Wimpress is a pretty important cog in the wheel. He is one of the co founders of Ubuntu MATE and now leads the project. More significantly for us, Wimpress is pretty much the only one working on Ubuntu MATE's Pi support and he can only work on that when Canonical doesnt have him doing all sorts of other things. It was a lack of his time as well as some technical issues that made the Pi3b+ ubuntu mate image take so long to get out. I am sure he would love some help. . .

What are the arguments against using Raspbian Buster a Debian flavor.? It 's ready, it works, has a large community of active developers and users and has the LDXE environment. For me it's great.

The argument against that is that there really only are KStars packages for Ubuntu which get built by Jasem. There are KStars packages for Raspbian and Debian but they are very old and don't contain the latest drivers etc. It is possible to build KStars and INDI yourself but that's tedious. See for instance

No arguments here...
I am using it now with latest full INdI and Kstars, built from Source, running nicely, headless using XRDP to control from windows laptop, this is the only way to get the full 4K video over Remote Desktop, it won’t k over any VNC versions, the max with those Is HD... :)

I agree - RPI3b+ was late (and some of us are still having problems with it using the Beta.2 :-( ) so how much later is RPI4 going to be if RPI3b+ isn't fully released yet. The guy has only so much time and compared to Raspbian seems to lack people resources.

Maybe Jasem has the same problem in supporting Raspbian versions ?

But at least Raspbian comes out with the new hardware - even if it still has a few problems.

If its a case of "someone" doing the donkey work to get a supported Raspbian version with automatic updates as per the present Ubuntu Mate (not compiling from some) I would stick my hand up to help in some way.

Frustrating I guess for all :-)

So what are my limitations now to using Raspbian with the Pi4 for dedicated Astro? The Pi4 4gig is sitting on my desk and I sort of just realized that the normal astro distro platforms like MATE won't be ready for awhile.

Personally, I prefer it to Ubuntu Mate, but you need to build it yourself.
