HiPS DSS streaks was created by Paul Nixon

Hi folks,

I just enabled HiPS overlay with DSS colors, and for the most part it looks gorgeous. However, the sky is also filled with pixel anomalies, and when you zoom in some resolve into streaks, sometimes two or three parallel like at M97, for example. They look weirdly like my pics when an airplane flies through.

What are these and can they be disabled/gotten rid of?

Some of them are probably rendering artifacts (switch to linear interpolation if you want to check), and some others are actually in the DSS data.

I have enabled that a while ago, and to be honest it looks awful and no matter what settings you use, even with linear interpolation it looks awful, i also have a square like pattern all over the image, and the only time the image looks half decent is when it’s zoomed right in on the object....any other time looks terrible....and some things are unrecognisable...
It’s the same on any PC I try it on too ☹️☹️

Thanks!

I tried the linear interpolation setting - no go.

I see the compression artifacts that get better with zooming in, but I'm curious about the streaks as illustrated in the attached pic. I'm beginning to think they really are airplanes. ;)

I don't know, but they don't resemble any satellite trails I've ever imaged.

These are all-sky surveys, and they are indeed suffering from all sort of human meteors. I checked a random star, HD141472, and KStars is "properly" rendering streaks from the survey database.

KStars near HD141472:

HiPS database near HD141475:

By the way, this really looks like a plane.

Ahhh...so in the source then! Okay, that being the case there's nothing to be done.

Thanks for that.

You should also note that DSS images are not positioned properly sometimes. Look at Pleiades for instance.

Ok, so it looks like the issues I am seeing are to do with the fact I use a 4k monitor, so is there anything g that can be done so this will display correctly on 4k, as these monitors are common place nowadays....
It’s the same on the RPI and on my i5 desktop PC, so it’s not an processing power issue..... :)
