This morning I pulled kstars from github and was able to compile it successfully.
Starting Ekos and a simulator session I am trying to solve an old light frame of the Iris Nebula using the load button.
There is no output in the gui but on the commandline, because I launched kstars from the comandline.
It finds one coordinate representation and reports that the Index file /usr/share/astrometry//astrometry.cfg is not FITS.
From this point onwards it works for minutes and reports:

The GUI is unresponsive so I had to press ctrl+c.
I used as Solver Type StellarSolver where I choosed the 1-Fast-Solving Profile.

I have to admit that the simulated telescope's field of view does not match the setup with which the light was taken.

If there is a special way to test the StellarSolver please give some advice!

Please try using the parallel small scale profile and set it to log none in the logs and see if that improves performance.

Fast solving does not use parallel processing and all the logging is probably slowing it down.

Also the unresponsive ness is probably caused by a change Jasem wanted to make yesterday to make The main StellarSolver class no longer a separate thread. I will address that today

It seems to crash on various settings, but I have attached the settings for one instance, and the fits file I am trying. This is with the simulators as well.

Thanks for your hints, Ron.

This time it was much faster. It took approximately 2 minutes to show the light frame in die viewer above Solutions Results.

But the light frame was not solved.

On the commandline are some error messages:

If you go to the Options... button and bring up the Index Files tab, does it show that you have the file index-4219 ? See the attached image, it should be in green. If you do not have it, you can download it from this tab. Select the loction in the Index Files Location: drop down that you can write to, typically your home directory works best as you will have permissions. The path listed in your error above uses your home directory, for example. Then click the check box next to the index-4219.fits file to download it and add it to your system. You can do this for any indexes that are missing that it wants to use.

You really should not need to use root to compile it. What error were you getting when you tried to compile it without sudo? Also, you did not mention, but are you also running it as root? You should not have to do this either, but if you want to, it may be as simple as adding the Pictures directory in root's home. It may not be created by the system as root is not a typical login user, so those default type folders may not be created.

I tried all combinations of star extraction method and solving method but the light frame was not solved.

So I tried it with my installed version of kstars namely kstars 3.5.0 Beta - the old one without the integrated stellarsolver - but it has another interesting message:

FITSIO status = 104: could not open the named file
Name of file to open is blank. (ffopen)

Is there a bug in the file open routine?

Under the sky - when the lights came from the camera - this version of kstars worked extremely well with the local installation of astronomy.net.

Yes, I have all the astrometry.net index files out there in my home directory because I use the offline solver.
