If you are just looking to back up your Kstars/Indi I think you only need the following:
~/.config/kstarsrc
~/.indi/*
~/.local/share/kstars/*

The way I do it is simple, if you are running from an SD card, then put a second SD card into a USB SD card holder and put into one of the USB ports on the RPI, then use the “Card copier” function in the menu, choose your SD card with the OS on for source, and the empty card as the destination, and let it do its thing....
If you run from an SSD drive as I do, then, just put the card in the empty SD card slot to make the copy using the same software in the main menu...
The card you use only needs to be as big as the space you have used on the main card, as it’s just copying the information and not empty space....

I did a quick google and came across a link to this howto which includes how to shrink the image down

Perhaps that's what you are after?

This must be it - thank you!
The second card/drive has to be empty, right?
(I tried that utility a while ago - didn't work then for some reason...)

The card you are copying too, does not need to be empty as it will get formatted as part of the copy process...

I meant - if I put a previously backed-up card there which is also bootable - would the system not get confused by having two bootable cards/drives?

If you put a fully bootable card in the RPI slot, then yes I think it will boot from that SD card first....

Of course, you can insert the card after the Pi is already booted, e.g. by using an SD Card reader connected to USB, so there would be no issue with booting from it.

Replied by nou on topic How to properly backup PI4?

Running "sudo fstrim /" on SD card should erase free space on SD card so then you can run fastest compression so image would have similar size than real used space.

On my normal Linux desktop I run something like "dd if=/dev/mmbclk | gzip -0 > rspi-backup.gz" so it compress on the fly.
