I am seriously thinking of buying a Rainbow Astro RST-135 Mount for portable use. Eventually I hope to get a StellarMate or similar to control the mount.

However, just to try things out initially can I connect my MacBook running KStars/EKOS/INDI directly to an RST-145 over cable as I do now to control my EQ-AZ6-GT?

Yes, this is how you would do it. There is a working dedicated driver for RST-135.

Yeah, the mount is USB2, so the cable it came with should work.
