I've had similar issues updating as well. When I try via the 'buttons' on the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3000, it deletes Kstars from the machine. When I use the iOS app, it'll say it's updating but doesn't do anything. If I use the desktop icon via VNC, it deletes Kstars. I did finally get an update to work via the Android version of Stellarmate app; I used my laptop with a program called 'Lplayer' which is a android emulator. After it completed and I rebooted it did not show that it was updated, but I ran the manual commands (per the FAQ it's "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y upgrade") and that finished the update and after a reboot it was full up.

Always always have a spare SD card backed up is what I've learned. This thread is also nice to keep your personal settings for Kstars/Ekos. indilib.org/forum/general/4301-moving-kstars-config-files.html

Hope that helps,
Chris

I had this happen to me once and it might have been at the same time as Morelli's problem. I'm guessing the Ekos computer that handles the update (and upgrade) requests was down at the time. When I tried later in the day, everything worked fine; I was able to update and upgrade with no problem.

I normally update via the Updater tool, but when that fails I generate a backup using the web interface, and then re-flash the flash drive with the latest image.

Sometimes restoring from the backup doesn't work, but if you just look in the backup tar all it is is a copy of a bunch of files. It is easy enough to put the kstars files back where they should be as everything is relative to the root / directory.

The only annoying part of this is I have to connect to the hotspot and re-input my wifi password, but that takes all of a minute.

2 issues exist. One is the update of Stellarmate version. Is it possible to do without having to build à new USB key ? If yes, following which rules ?

The second is the update of Kstars-bleeding. On two USB key, the last version is 3.6.0. On one USB key, I can obtain the 3.6.1 !

Jasem is certainly a better authority, but the short answer is Yes, you can update SM without resorting to a key. By a "key" I assume you mean downloading a version onto a thumb drive and flashing the small card that plugs-into the SM.

For example, Linux distributions often update the kernel with the updates installed via a program like apt or yum. The same holds true for updating the Rasberry Pi OS. Updates to Ekos are on a bi-monthly basis and I doubt it's expected we would all go flash new cards every two months.

Hope this helps.

I am a noob to everything Raspberry Pi.

This OS sucks. Every time I try to do an update, everything is broken. There is an updater in the OS - it works about half the time. I tried from the Android app - useless, download is cut off half way through and I end up having to re-flash the USB card.
Why can't they get this to work?

It can be challenging. I guess the thing I try to recognize is do I need to update. Often times the fixes aren’t solving anything for me; so I stay where I’m at.

I think the best way to get help is to screen record what you’re doing and share it on here. Otherwise you just get the experienced people who understand the nuances and never have issues with it.

For some reason I cannot post anything of length so I've included it as an attachment. I hope.

I didn’t think to do it individually. I always cut n paste the line from the stellarmate faq.

Do you know of a manually way to go from stable to nightly builds? That has been my other bugaboo since often times fixes I’ve asked for are in the nightly build..

Oh yes. Got to this webpage
www.indilib.org/get-indi/download-ubuntu.html

and scroll down until you see the header Nightly Builds. You want to add the repository for the nightly builds as shown, then apt-update, then install the programs (kstars-bleeding, indi-full).

I think, but am not sure, you need to remove the stable repository in order for this to all work. To remove the stable repository, type
apt-add-repository remove ppa:mutlaqja/ppa
