I recently bought the stellarmate OS and installed it on a Rpi 3b+. I was trying to update kstars to the latest 3.2.1 build. I followed the instructions and got some errors:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

At the top of the output it says

“You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these”

so please open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get -f install

I did that and that's what brought up the error message at the bottom. I ran the software updater and it is from the BIND 9.x update.

Something similar here, it seems to be related to Ubuntu1.14 where it should have been Ubuntu1.12, I also tried apt-get install -f, no changes:

The Package System is broken
Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f
Transaction failed: The package system is broken

EDIT: Just downloaded Stellarmate 1.3.4, doing a hard reset - I'll be back :-)

I note that some of you are prepending your commands with "sudo" and some are not. For Linux noobs, note that a "regular" user will probably not have permissions to update system files and so the commands will fail. To get around this, use "sudo", short for "super-user do". It will run the command as the "superuser" account. You will be prompted for a password, which should be the one you use for logging in (it has nothing to do with the superuser's account password). After you authenticate once, you should be able to run multiple "sudo" commands without authenticating every time.

see xkcd.com/149/ for an example :-)

I've just come across this.....

Try force installing/overriding the package with the already downloaded and cached update to resolve the conflict:
dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/bind9-host_1%3a9.10.3.dfsg.P4-8ubuntu1.14_armhf.deb

Then resolving the dependencies again
apt -f install

Please bear in mind that if you are signed in as the "stellarmate" user you will need to prefix these commands with "sudo"

I get this, but what after 18 months of just doing normal updates with no issues, should we have to do it like this now..?.? I don’t understand...

It’s a temporary bug AstroNerd, it will be fixed.
I updated to 1.3.4, did a software update afterwards omitting any Ubuntu updates - no problem.

... with a clean install of StellarMateOS_1.3.4.img I did an upgrade (not a dist-upgrade)

stellarmate@stellarmate:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages will be upgraded:
indi-sx indi-sx-dbg iproute iproute2 libldap-2.4-2 login passwd unattended-upgrades
8 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
16 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 1,859 kB of archives.
After this operation, 89.1 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y

And then another apt-get upgrade showed this:

stellarmate@stellarmate:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So for now, as DrawsACircle just mentioned, just do an upgrade ..

for info:

upgrade
upgrade is used to install the newest versions of all packages currently installed on the system from the sources enumerated in /etc/apt/sources.list. Packages currently installed with new versions available are retrieved and upgraded; under no circumstances are currently installed packages removed, or packages not already installed retrieved and installed. New versions of currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without changing the install status of another package will be left at their current version. An update must be performed first so that apt-get knows that new versions of packages are available.

dist-upgrade
dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. So, dist-upgrade command may remove some packages. The /etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package files. See also apt_preferences(5) for a mechanism for overriding the general settings for individual packages.
