1.4.4 on Rpi4 slow

I'm finding 1.4.4 much slower than 1.4.3 on my rpi4 4gb. I've never used a rpi3 so have no comparison of the speed of that.
I've turned off as much graphics effects in plasma as I can find but it is still slow.
Some examples of what I mean. Windows open slowly, menus react slowly, and things like the pointer in kstars moves very slowly when moving from one object to another on the planetarium display. It also seems to take longer to boot to a point where I can log in with a VNC viewer.

I'm not sure if it's something I've done or if there are settings to change that will improve things?

Perhaps it's because of the switch to KDE desktop environment instead of Mate. KDE is the native environment for KStars. Some users reported it to be slower, others to be smoother. We're trying to reduce the latency in the response time.

1.4.4 is slow for me. Wi-Fi hotspot is also flaky there.
Using 1.4.3. (it's so much cleaner looking and more responsive)

No expert here... but make sure you are using the fastest SD chip. I using a: SanDisk 64GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I

What is the largest size SD card you can use on the RPi4 with StellarMate?

I don't know the largest, but when you go from 32GB to 64GB it changes the formating from FAT to exFAT. Not saying that it makes it any faster, but I like having the extra space and not having to worry about running out (which I did several times on my 32GB SD's).

FWIW, my strategy WRT SD Cards has been to use a reasonably fast 32Gb card, because I've found it takes a ton of time to clone an SD Card, and 64Gb takes twice as long to clone as 32Gb, and I like to clone them to be able to back up my system every now and then.

To combat the real "running out of disk space" issue that Megiddo@ mentioned, I've bought fast 128Gb USB sticks (I use this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MU8TZRV/ref...02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and write all my captured images to the stick, not the SD Card. On my RPi4, writing to that stick on a USB3 port is as fast as writing to the SD Card. The extra benefit of this approach is that in the morning, when I then want to transfer all my images to my big hard drves, I just unplug the stick from the Pi and plug it in to my mac.

That's a great solution. I had been hooking up a removable hard drive. But a fast USB stick is a much better option. I ordered one!

If you don't like KDE or think it is too sluggish on the PI (and I agree), coinsider using something else. For the adventurous, and I explicitly do not recommend this for anyone not knowing his or her way around Ubuntu or Linux in general:
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment

There's basically every desktop environment or windows manager available... Stellarmate seems to be based on KDE neon which is based on some Ubuntu LTS release.

I found neon not to be particularily suited for productive use (I used it before for non-astro-related tasks), it is the KDE showcase distro, and IMHO the only thing it has going for it is an up-to-date KDE. Anyway. Before trying anything, make a backup of your SD card.

Cheers
Sven
