Kstars on RPi4 was created by Rishi Garrod

I have been running Ekos on the RPi4 and Kstars on my Macbook pro. This works great but I would like to make it into a completely self contained solution.

Who also runs Kstars on the RPi4? Do you run it on a separate Pi or does it all run fine on a single 4GB RPi4?
Any there any major disadvantages? I use VNC to connect to the Pi and it is very responsive.

Hi,
I run it all on the PI4, the 8gb version but 4gb is fine, and I run from a Samsung 120gb SSD...
I also use RealVNC to access, as it’s much faster that the build it noVNC, also I use a monitor with 2k resolution, 2560 x 1440....
All runs perfectly....

I also run SM OS on a pi 8Gb with SSD drive. Disadvantage: pi 4B+ wifi for me was flaky. I had problems
with wifi connectivity from my LAN to the pi on 2.4Gz channel but remedied that by running an extender at
the opposite end of the house and 2 floors up from the main router. I added a wpa_supplicant file to name
the SSIDs and priorities of the router/extender and I set the priority of the stellarmate hot spot to the lowest value. I use
VNC Viewer (RealVNC) to remote to the pi from anywhere inside now.

Here another user running KStars on Ubuntu Mate 64 bit on a RPi4 8Gb. I run everything on the RPi, which I have connected with an ethernet cable to my network. WIFI really is flaky for me on RPi so that's why.

So I started experimenting. I want to get the resolution set correctly. I am using a Macbook Pro.
I have added the last 3 lines to the config.txt file:
[pi4]
# Enable DRM VC4 V3D driver on top of the dispmanx display stack
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
#hdmi_enable_4kp60=1
hdmi_enable_4k=1
gpu_mem=256
max_framebuffer_width=2880
max_framebuffer_height=1800
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=88
hdmi_cvt=2880 1800 60 3 0 0

When I run xrandr -q I get
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1152 x 864, maximum 7680 x 7680
HDMI-1 connected primary 1152x864+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Any ideas what I should be doing?

Corrected hdmi_cvt=2880 1800 60 3 0 0
to hdmi_cvt=2880 1800 60 2 0 0
aspect ratio was wrong. But still the same result.

your group and mode values are incompatible maybe ? seems like group 2 only goes up to 87:

the section starting at "Which values are valid for my monitor?" looks like it has
the info you need

rishigarrod,

Kstars runs fine on a Raspberry Pi 4 2GB along with Ekos and PHD2 - although I have stopped using PHD2 recently and started using the internal guider.

I VNC into it over WiFi.

Same. RPi4, 4 GB, usually pretty responsive but occasionally logy UI. I usually connect via Ethernet in my yard b/c the WiFi is spotty out there; in the field, the hotspot WiFi access isn't a problem. I run it all on the Pi and VNC in; don't want an imaging session in the field to tank b/c my laptop battery got cold and died! Switched the WiFi to only do 2.4GHz, IIRC, due to the WiFi/USB 3.0 conflict. Probably better now that StellarMate has moved off Ubuntu, but I've never tested it.

I've been using Astroberry but I'm now setting up an ArchLinux based RPi4 build, based on Manjaro ARM. I have yet done an engineering run but it all connects to my equipment.

I use a RPi4 4GB, the RPi4's are actually 64 bit machines but Raspbian/Raspberry OS only defaults to 32 bit unless you use the RPi 400 which has 8GB of memory (Manjaro ARM is only 64 bit).

For both the current Astroberry and my Manjaro based one I use VNC. I have found that VNC with my Manjaro one seems to be way better with less dropped packets, this was even before getting a USB WiFi dongle, though I would recommend getting a USB dongle for the WiFi as they act as an external antenna.
