On multiple occasions, I have had to aid new and experienced users with advice on how to circumvent a minor issue in the astrometry index downloader. The issue is the default index location is set to All Sources. That includes folders under /usr/ with permission access issues. That issue makes it impossible to select indexes to download. The workaround is to change from All Sources to specifically the folder under /home/. At least that is the situation under Linux. But this workaround is not at all intuitive and frustrates many attempting to get plate solving working.
This should be remedied, ensuring indexes can be installed to a location with the necessary permissions by default.
Probably just an issue with the particular Linux distribution you are using as I have always followed the install instructions under Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) and never had any such issues.
In fact I did a new build a couple of days ago and it went flawlessly.
