A quick update in case anyone experienced similar problems: Updating Kstars from 6:3.4.2+202004251749~ubuntu19.10.1 to nightly build 6:3.4.3+202006171130~ubuntu19.10.1 (from ppa:mutlaqja/indinightly) solved the problem; autofocus upon a filter change works again.
