I’m wondering if it’s possible to install and run SM (KStars, Ekos etc) from a Linux based PC rather than a RPI? The reason is that I find the RPI under powered and the wifi flaky.
if it is possible what version of Linux should I use?
StellarMate is a prebuild distro for raspberry pi, ready to use.
You can install all the tools on your linux system using many scripts available online that automatize the procedure, or you can follow these steps to build your system
yes a script that you can use could be this one github.com/Patrick-81/NAFABox/blob/master/doc/README_EN.md.
basically indi-full and kstars-bleeding contain all the necessary exept the astronometry indexes tha are required for plate solve
you can use multiples platforms like raspberry, nuc or other pc, notebook ecc.
i use a raspberry pi 4 with 4gb because i do not have a fixed position and use batteries to power up all the things, and i need to reduce power consuption
