Given that this is the case, what would you recommend as a procedure for saving/restoring existing configuration? I have added a few things not included in Astroarch and would just as soon not lose them.

Mostly stuff having nothing to do with AstroArch per se like a password manager so I can use the browser and log onto a few sites. Screen color preferences (I don't like the defaults on the old version). Maybe one or two other things that I've forgotten since I haven't used the rig in a couple of months.

Not sure, I would suggest to backup the config files (if any) of the programs you added and configured and move them over to the new version.
For the colors I am not sure, I am confident plasma stores its config somewhere but I need to look it up asi have no idea where that file is

Aaa I would also suggest to download the 1.8 image again. Today I pushed an intermediate version with all updated packages and a fixed dependency issue for indi so if you downloaded the image before today morning, I highly suggest to pull the new one
