It's not freezing on my system, but I'll compare resource usage this weekend, I've only tested on my desktop, which has 64GB ram, might make less resourceful systems start swapping I suppose.

If I am not mistaken, this is possible: if for example you create a folder HIPS and then subfolders Norder1, Norder2 etc, then the user can select those subfolders individually through the torrent client.

But to be honest, I do not think that there is any need to do that now, it works greats just like you 've done it (thank you for that again!)

The whole point now is the seeding :-)

I found the following Table online in this document (page 11): www.ivoa.net/documents/HiPS/20170406/PR-HIPS-1.0-20170406.pdf
First item is the Norder, second is the number of files (or tiles), third item is the angular size of each tile, fourth item is the angular size of each pixel in each tile.
So for example, if you are wishing to use the HiPS for framing, this tells you that Norder5 provides you with 12.88 arc seconds per pixel, which each tile being 1.832 degrees across.
Norder7 has each tile 27.48 arc minutes across, with a pixel size of 3.221 arc seconds.

FYI, Norder8 would be around 78GB in size, with a pixel size of 1.61 arc seconds (it appears to halve as you raise the HiPS order by 1)

0 12 58.63° 6.871'
1 48 29.32° 3.435'
2 192 14.66° 1.718'
3 768 7.329° 51.53”
4 3072 3.665° 25.77”
5 12288 1.832° 12.88”
6 49152 54.97' 6.442”
7 196608 27.48' 3.221”

Would it fry my Pi if I copy all the files from Norder 1 to 7 on its SSD? :D

Copying maybe not (if the SSD is large enough).
Zooming in and out in KStars starmap, probably yes

Should be ok if you have the space. But you probably don't need 6-7. Level 5 is pretty detailed.

If you use the DSS Color quite a bit, then I find having them local makes for a smoother scroll / pan / zoom experience.

Okay, the download & extraction is now complete. I'll first copy Norder 1 to 5 and try how the Pi/ KStars performs. If all goes well, will try the 6 & 7 as well.

Can you give quick instructions on how you downloaded them? I used that original dropbox link and i would like to learn the proper way.

Thanks!

Sure, Chad

I actually used the four torrent links provided one after the other on Giles' blog post on the topic here:

coochey.net/?p=699

You need a torrent client to download, of course. The first one had Norder 1 to 4, and the other three had 5, 6, and 7 thereafter.
