Sudden problems with plate solving Kstars 3.6.8

That screenshot controls the saving of logs in a dedicated location (I know where it is on macOS. but not Linux). The console, by contrast, only appears in the Align Module window. Mind you, I'm a new user: I might have got the wrong end of the stick ;-)

Yeah, Toni had posted a screenshot of his setup and how the logs should be, but the post is gone now. Maybe he realized the additional logging he added to this test binary is not going into the kstars/ekos logs at all.

You asked where to put the kstars binary. On linux it's a single binary file and is in /usr/local/bin

On mac maybe you can open file location from the pinned icon? and see? Not sure. could be a lot of places depending on how it's configured on the mac these days. I think the last mac I spent any real time with was snow leopard so likely I can't help much. Does kstars use x11 server? or is it a native window app. no idea :)

The binary in question is called "kstars" on linux. Where as the indi components present themselves as server binary executables/library files. Kstars includes EKOS and isn't a separate binary. So if you were to compile the beta, you'd end up with a kstars.app or something on the mac, or emebeded in that folder is the actual kstars binary.

Thanks, but that's not there either. Of the many things in that directory the ones surrounding "k" are idle3.10 (no idea) and lame (ditto).

But you got me thinking. So I opened the Kstars package and indeed there's lots in there. I found all the Indi .xmls's for example, but don't have time now for more exploration -- I have a deadline of 8am tomorrow to complete my part of a complicated technical proposal and it's already 23:59

As you can see, it is failing to slew to correct at all from what I can see. 4000Arcsec is about my pointing error with the model turned off.

So even slewing away, syncing, then slewing back fails to center an star very close to the location. Should have been 70 or so arcsec from center at worst. I even tried to sync within TSX to make sure it was really syncing, and kstars still put it 4000 arcsec off and then couldn't slew to center.

Hopefully this is useful. Your current beta works fine when set to differential which is my default mode anyway (and I suspect anyone with a paramount and probably 10 micron). Certainly far better than 3.6.8. Any way to get that published so others can work with it? I can't explain the behavior when differential slew is off. I never tried it on the older versions that way so I can't comment if that is expected. For Paramounts at least this is workable. I've had a few more instances of the problem happening in scheduler, so that might be something else to look at. As in, does it need some modifications to handle the same logic as the alignment tab? Ill try to record what I was doing when it happens again.

Thanks again for all your work on this! I still also think that it should not be storing any model when in differential mode. Unless it's only in the display and not affecting future solves/slews. It should just never store it and present it in any way. The way the model page works at the moment it "appears" to be storing all the solves since the start of the session (and yes I have been clearing it). If they are affecting the slews/solves then they are competing with the TSX model. But that is probably a different thread. I don't know where each contributors roles are. :)

Thanks for doing the testing. I’m we’ve had cloudy skies since my last post… I’ll see if I can get this installed for our next clear night and validate it works for 10u mounts.

You bring up a good point about the model built inside of ekos… I always wondered about that.

I don’t know what its purpose is but I agree it should probably be ‘auto delete’ for mounts that use differential skewing.

There is no mount modeling inside Ekos. This is done at the INDI Mount driver level (e.g. EQMod..etc)

Your copy of the console log of the align module in normal mode ("sync mode") shows that the mount repeatedly receives the command to slew to target (green coordinates). However it does not move even an arcsecond: The solution remains identical throughout the whole session (see red coordinates)! I have no idea why this happens. Do Paramount devices have special switches/possibilities regarding slew commands?

Here is an informative comment about the EKOS utility "Mount Model" in the align module from the author Rob Lancaster. Another interesting thread is about fundamental questions regarding the mount model.

concerning your review of Bryan's log, showing the telescope didn't move.
Let's look at 3 of the lines (in time order top to bottom):

The telescope coordinates are RA (04h 58m 35s) DEC ( 33° 12' 18"), but is actually pointing at the solution: RA (05h 02m 40s) DEC ( 33° 49' 31")
The next line, Sync, is apparently supposed to tell the scope that it's actually pointing to the Sync position, This step seems to be essential for success of the next line; Slew to RA (04h 58m 35s) DEC ( 33° 12' 18").

If the Sync did nothing, then the scope won't move as it's pointing there already. And indeed it looks like it did not do anything.

In my case, where differential slewing was enabled, the difference was that the scope did move, but the target was updated by the same amount it moved, so the correction was always the same.

My rush-job is now done, by the way, but I didn't yet have time to look into compiling the source. It is, in any case, cloudy at the moment and forecast.
